Lorna, we do miss you. You joined the ESA committee in 1995 and kept going with it ‘til 2024, when you felt you couldn’t contribute any more. And that’s a goodly spell by anyone’s standards.
So many memories Lorna. Do you recall when you and Ken used to pick me up to go to meetings? And how, while we were there, Ken always fixed himself up with a haircut and then filled himself up with fish and chips, occupying his time while waiting for us. And driving us back with the radio at full bore to hear the football results (or maybe so he didn’t have to listen to our chatter about the b….y meeting?)
You have a close family Lorna, and always took huge pride in their achievements. You had your own achievements too, not least a couple of successful breeding lines – four-legged and two-legged. And you were a pretty fair cook too; I still recall – taste even - that chocolate cake (called the ‘gannet’ cake, for obvious reasons) you used to make for the refreshments at our shows. It was so popular we helpers had to squirrel some away early on, or else we’d certainly have missed out. As far as one of those breeding lines is concerned, in your younger days you were a very active member of our association, breeding and showing some quality dogs. And showing apart, you also worked hard for the ESA, writing up catalogues, folding raffle tickets and often helping out in the kitchen.
And so, Lorna, as we must, we come to the hard bits. I know, latterly, how frustrated you were in having to use a wheelchair and to rely on others for things you could no longer do. Frustrating, for sure, but maybe some small consolation lay in that you were never short of company and support. And that’s a reflection of you Lorna, your qualities and the way that you lived your life.
I do wish, Lorna, that you could read all the uplifting messages from your friends; and you had, deservedly, many friends. And although it is hard for us finally to say goodbye, at least you will now be with Ken once more. And you will not soon be forgotten – ‘Moorbrook’ lives on in many hearts and many pedigrees.
Farewell, old friend

The Kennel Club has recently published a new ‘Health Standard’ for good breeding practice, with recommendations for each breed. The English Setter Health Committee has worked with the Kennel Club for many years, but does not agree with the recommendations in the current Health Standard. The Committee continues to work with the Kennel Club to propose changes to the next revision of the standard.
The English Setter clubs have all agreed to recommendations made by the Joint English Setter Health Committee, on what health tests should be completed for dogs used in breeding programmes, and new potential owners should ask and expect the following from breeders:
Essential
That both parents have been Hip – X-rayed and scored through a recognised Scheme. Such schemes would be the BVA/KC UK scheme – these will be viewable on the health test result finder on the KC website, the Australian Hip scoring Scheme or the European Hip Scoring scheme - these will not be visible on the KC website currently.
Recommended
Many breeders now hearing test (BAER) their breeding dogs and puppies. Deafness can be in one or both ears. The rate of deafness in the breed is low, 4.5% are deaf in one ear, and 0.5% are deaf in both ears.
Imported (not born in the UK) dogs used for breeding
Should be PRA4 and NCL DNA tested. These conditions are rare, and are not found in the UK population so there is no requirement to test.
Not required
BVA/KC Elbow scoring. Whilst owners may choose to elbow x-ray their dogs, there has never been a prevalence of elbow dysplasia in the breed that has required the breed to be part of this scheme.
